Hania Aamir joins UN Women as National Goodwill Ambassador for Pakistan

Actor takes on powerful new role to raise voice against discrimination and inequality

Hania Aamir has added another feather to her cap, the actor has been appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women Pakistan. The global star has a strong and undeniable social media presence and will empower young girls using her massive platform.

“As a renowned actor and advocate, Hania will use her platform to raise awareness, inspire action, and amplify the voices of women and girls across Pakistan,” announced the UN Pakistan office in an Instagram post on Tuesday. “Together, we will continue working toward a future where every woman and girl can realize her full potential — free from violence, discrimination, and inequality.”

Aamir has joined a prestigious list of goodwill ambassadors, with activist Muniba Mazari, Indian actor Farhan Akhtar and Indian tennis pro Sania Mirza. National ambassadors for other United Nations (UN) agencies in Pakistan include Fawad Khan for the UN Development Programme, Mahira Khan for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Shehzad Roy for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and Saba Qamar for the UN agency for children, UNICEF.

The actor is the second Pakistani to be given the ambassador title by UN Women after Muniba Mazari in 2015.

Netizens shared some skepticism about UN Women Pakistan’s decision to appoint Aamir. One IG user questioned this decision, “But why? What exactly qualifies her for this role?” whereas another pointed out that, “There are many credible women for this role and you chose her, okay, let’s see what she does.”

However, most of her loyal fans reacted positively. “So proud of you, you’re truly representing our nation with immense pride,” wrote one IG user. “Right candidate for such an important prospect, great decision,” praised another.
